Organizers of the FRD LMP3 series announces today that Round 1 of the 2017 series, originally scheduled for 27-28 May at the new Zhejiang circuit, has been delayed until 1-2 July.
A delay in the delivery of the Ligier LMP3 cars at the Customs stage has led to a situation where the required testing and shakedown time could not be completed before the originally scheduled first event date.
“Clearly to operate the series to a high standard, we need to ensure that all teams have ample prior opportunity to test the cars,” Formula Racing Development Limited (FRD) Founder Kenneth Ma said. “Unfortunately with some further delays in shipment, the window to do enough testing in May has closed, so we’ll start in July.”
The delay will reduce the 2017 Series to four events, with the first event still at Zhejiang.
FRD LMP3 Series Manager Shane Rogers said, “It’s unfortunate that shipping hasn’t gone as plan, but we cannot afford to compromise on the shakedown phase of the project. The Ligier is clearly a tried and proven package, so there is less risk; however it is still critical for our partner teams to get ample opportunity to shakedown the cars prior to racing.”
The teams are generally supportive of the decision to deliver the best possible outcome.
“Obviously it is disappointing we’re not starting in May,” said S&D Motorsports Director Harry Chai. “However the change in calendar will allow us more time to plan and prepare for the season ahead. We support the decision and look forward to getting our hands on the new car ready for the first event in July.”
The series will now be reduced to four events, with the teams visiting Shanghai twice on 29-30 July and 26-27 August, before concluding at Zhuhai International Circuit on 16-17 September.
