The GT4 platform will continue its expansion in 2019 with the launch of a new six-round championship that features events in Sweden and Norway.
GT4 Scandinavia will run under licence from SRO Motorsports Group, which has partnered with Swedish racing driver, promoter and commentator Leif Lindström to create the new series.
A provisional six-round calendar has been planned for the inaugural season, beginning in Sweden’s southernmost county at Ring Knutstorp on 3-4 May. Former grand prix venue Anderstorp Raceway will host the second event on 1-2 June, followed two weeks later by a trip to Skellefteå.
Karlskoga Motorstadion will stage round four on 17-18 August, after which the series will head for Norway on 13-14 September when the Rudskogen circuit welcomes GT4 Scandinavia competitors for the first time.
The campaign is set to conclude on 4-5 October 2019 at Mantorp Park in south-eastern Sweden. Each event during the inaugural GT4 Scandinavia campaign will be staged alongside the established Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia, ensuring a stable platform for the new championship during its first year.
The series will achieve further stability by following the format of its German, French and European counterparts. Two 60-minute races will be staged across each weekend, while the class structure will consist of a Pro-Am category featuring one bronze-rated driver per crew, and an Am contest for all-bronze line-ups.
Though the inaugural race is still more than four months away, 14 entries have already been submitted, a number that is set to expand as the season approaches.
Those entered so far include a number of established GT4 squads with experience of a range of high-level categories. A total of seven different manufacturers are represented among the initial entrants, suggesting an impressively varied grid for the opening campaign. German heavyweights Audi, BMW, Mercedes-AMG and Porsche will all be represented, alongside Ginetta, McLaren and Maserati.
With a strong calendar in place and extremely healthy interest from competitors, GT4 Scandinavia can look forward to an exciting maiden season in 2019.
Leif Lindström, GT4 Sandinavia: “I´m very happy to represent the GT4 category in Scandinavia and it´s a great opportunity for us to share the race weekends with Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia. Working with SRO once more is also very exciting. I have been the Scandinavian promotor for Ginetta since 2007, a series that have seen many gifted drivers trying to make the next step. GT4 Scandinavia with the Pro-Am system and sensible costs will make it much easier for them to progress.”
Stephane Ratel, SRO Motorsports Group founder and CEO: “I am delighted to have partnered with Leif Lindström to create GT4 Scandinavia and am very excited to be launching next season. I know that Leif’s vast experience both on the track and off it will make him the ideal person to lead this venture. From our side, it is a great pleasure to see the GT4 platform continue its expansion. With GT4 Scandinavia adopting the same format that has achieved success elsewhere, I have no doubt that it will go from strength to strength in the coming years.”
