The European Le Mans Series goes to Monza this weekend for the second round of the season. It’s time then for Joel Camathias to experience the always special moment of ‘home race’, especially awaited this year, as the Lugano-born driver did not have the opportunity to race at Monza in 2016, when he was competing in the WEC. Family, friends and fans are expected to be numerous this year in the Autodromo Nazionale that, although being located beyond the border, is the closest track to Canton Ticino. Motorsport fans from Italian-speaking Switzerland will have other home heroes to cheer for, as Stefano Comini will be present in the TCR International Series round also included in the event.
Joel comes to Monza particularly confident, after the excellent start of the season at the Silverstone 4 Hours, which yielded second position and podium. The Porsche 911 RSR of Proton Competition proved competitive, in a LMGTE category very competitive, and the association with team mates Christian Ried from Germany and Matteo Cairoli from Italy, very effective. All the premises for a good result are there.
Joel Camathias:
“I am anxious to be again at Monza, a friendly track that I know well, and means always something special, because of all the history it entails and because it is so close to home. This is even more the case this year, as I haven’t competed in Monza since 2015 in the Italian GT. On top, Matteo is from Como, so it is two out of the three drivers having local hero status, and we hope that all the people that will come to support us can give us the little push to reach the podium again, and why not, the top step of it. A Silverstone, we proved that we are competitive, as a team and as a drivers’ trio. Let’s cross our fingers!”
